Today was Curt’s first “real” day at work since we arrived on Thursday evening. We waited on him to get home before we went out looking for adventure today. We’ve only seen the Danube River from afar since we’ve been here, so we decided to go check it out today. We walked around part of Donauinsel, an artificial island built to control flood waters. It divides the river into the Donau (Danube) and the Neue Donau (New Danube). Donauinsel has a lot of green space, paths for bikers and joggers, picnic tables, and other recreational areas. We explored a water park area that was closed for the day to see if Griffin would like to come back when it’s open. He was definitely interested!
After we left Donauinsel, we headed over to The Prater to check it out. We wanted to see it at night, but it doesn’t get dark here until after 9:00 pm, so there wasn’t much time to ride the attractions before they closed. We didn’t ride the ferris wheel, the Riesenrad, this time, but plan to come back. Curt is thinking of bringing all the students to ride together, so we can do it then. We are also thinking of waiting until our visiting family members arrive.
It was very pretty to see the lights in the city on our way back to the apartment. We took a picture of the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera House) and a nearby hotel while waiting on our tram to arrive.
Oh yeah, Curt looked up the Romantic Cafe-Bar and found out that it was what we expected…a brothel. It’s interesting because we are nowhere near any of the streets that could be considered a red light district. Everything that we’ve seen about our area of town is that it is one of the nicer districts and have had locals comment in that regard. Prostitution is legal in Vienna, so perhaps this district has establishments such as this rather than prostitutes on the street.
